Easy Recipes for Kids to Make

My 9-year-old son continues to surprise me in the kitchen. He is constantly asking me if he can help me cook and he learns quickly. You should see his egg-cracking accuracy. He’s even better than me!

So far he’s learned a few ways to cook eggs, how to make French toast, grilled cheese, and he even makes his own sausage and egg sandwich. Let me tell you, it certainly makes breakfast time before school go much more smoothly.

The other day I wasn’t feeling well, so I asked him to make lunch for everyone. He did it! That is such a great help for us all now, and knowing how to cook will definitely help him someday when he lives on his own. I am sure his future wife and kids will thank me as well!

Now we are thinking of a few more recipes for him to add to his repertoire. Pretty soon he’ll probably need to get his own cookbook! If you are looking to teach your kids to cook, here are some easy recipes for your kids to make:

Easy Breakfast Egg & Toast

Making eggs is easy and a great way to get a protein-packed breakfast. First teach your child how to properly break an egg; perhaps have him or her break the eggs over a small bowl and have another bowl handy for the shells. Once your child has practiced a few times, then making eggs will be much easier.

Select a nonstick skillet and place on the burner. Turn on burner to medium high. Once burner is semi-hot, crack an egg into skillet. While that is cooking, put a piece of bread in the toaster. Once it pops out, put some butter on it.

Once your egg is almost cooked on one side (just a few minutes), then break the yolk. Flip with a silicone or other spatula (not metal as it will scratch the nonstick pan). Let cook only a minute or two and remove from the skillet. Turn off burner.

Place egg on your toast and enjoy a great breakfast!

Kids’ Easy Lunch Wrap

Wraps are a great option for kids because they can eat them at home or make them to pack into their lunches for school! They can pick their favorite items to put inside, making it more fun and more likely they will eat them.

Ingredients:

  • Flour tortilla
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato, sliced
  • Cucumber, sliced
  • Carrot, grated
  • Deli turkey or shredded chicken
  • Cheese, sliced or grated
  • Cream cheese, mayo and mustard, or salad dressing

Instructions:

  1. Place tortilla on a large plate.
  2. Add cream cheese, or mayo and mustard, or salad dressing.
  3. Next, add any of the ingredients you desire!
  4. Make sure to include at least one protein, like chicken or turkey.
  5. Wrap up like a burrito and enjoy!
  6. If putting into your lunch, cut in half and place in a baggie.

Easy Dinner Pasta

Boiling water is an important skill for any child to master; so make sure to clearly outline how to do it step-by-step.

Direction

  1. Select a medium-sized saucepan and fill halfway with water. Place on the burner and turn on medium high.
  2. In a few minutes (don’t leave the room!) the water will get hot enough to boil. This means that there will be lots of bubbles coming up. Add enough pasta (any kind you like!) so that the water will still be covering it.
  3. Let it boil for 7-8 minutes. Using a fork, grab one piece of pasta and let it cool, then taste it. If it is cooked, then take the entire pan off the burner. (If it’s not cooked, let it boil for another minute or two.) Turn off the burner.
  4. Using a colander, strain the pasta immediately. Place pasta in a large bowl and add any sauce you desire! Spaghetti sauce, alfredo sauce, or any homemade sauce that you like. Enjoy!
